ABOUT
Clinical research is vital for providing a chance for qualifying individuals to safely participate in clinical trials for vaccines and medications that may lead to more effective and life enhancing medical treatments not only in Namibia but also all over the world. The emergence of COVID 19 in 2020 resulted in enormous controversies around the administration of COVID-19 vaccine. Because of the newest nature of the vaccine, it did not go through the familiar rigorous clinical testing periods. Vaccine development is an arduous process, long and complex process often lasting 10 to 15 years from exploratory stage to licensing as a safe and effective product.
Many countries in the world, including South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia, have facilities that are meant for clinical trial research. Namibia has none, although policies in this regard date back to the nineties, but nobody dared took up this crucial initiative in the health sector. Petwa Medical Practice CC plans to break this deadlock, should be given an opportunity to implement it.
WHY CLINICAL RESEARCH
This service is long overdue in Namibia. As said earlier, the Concept was coined in the 1990s when Dr. Libertine Amadhila was the health Minister, but it was never followed up. The challenge that the Namibian, and indeed the global health sector, is experiencing calls for the intensification of clinical research initiatives. The emergence of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic (with unexpected variants) has increased the need for countries, including Namibia, to have clinical research centres because some of these variants are country specific such as the South African scenario.
The idea is to help bring clinical research from the laboratories across the world to people in Namibia, to provide a chance for qualifying individuals to safely participate in clinical trials for vaccines and medications that may lead to more effective, life enhancing medical treatments not only in Namibia, but also globally.
